My theme of study is: Flight and Fall
Media: movies

Garfield 2, a funny movie about two feline look-alikes. Not exactly the place where you would go looking for themes like flight and fall. But even here the theme can be found. Prince, the cat is the new king of England, Garfield is the king of the household. When Garfield goes to England, the two cats get mixed up, and they swap places. Garfield experiences flight as he becomes the king of England, and Prince experiences fall (until he finds out about lasagna). Eventually, the two cats meet each other, and defeat the common enemy. After that Garfield is reunited with John, Prince becomes the king of England again, and they all lived happily ever after/ flight.
Media: books
"The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" by John Boyne includes the the theme of flight and fall. The story takes place in WWII. The story revolves around 9 year old Bruno. Bruno used to live a great life in Berlin, but then he had to move far away because of his fathers job. He moves to a house in the countryside. He gets very bored thee because no one lives there and he has no one to play with. One day he decides to go exploring and stumbles across a concentration camp (only he doesn't know what it is). On the other side of the camp's fence there is Jewish boy of the same age as Bruno. The two boys become friends even though they are separated by the fence of the camp. One day they Jewish boy's father disappears. Bruno agrees to help him and disguises himself as a Jew. He finds a loose spot in the fence, and crawls under. They search the camp for the boy's father, but they can't find him. Then the soldiers order a group of Jews (including the boy and Bruno) to go inside an air-tight room. The soldiers locked the door, and that was the end of Bruno and the boy. The story relates to the theme because, in the beginning Bruno experienced "flight" because life was so good. Then "fall" because he was so bored and unhappy about his new home. Then "flight" again because he got a new good friend. Then "fall" again because he died.

The song I chose is called "Viva La Vida" and it was sung by the band Coldplay.
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the world
Now in the morning I sleep alone,
Sweep the streets I used to own...
(music)
I used to roll the dice
See the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing,
Now the old king is dead, long live the king
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, pillars of sand,
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in the foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know that there was never,
never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(music)
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a sliver plate
Just a puppet on lonely string
Oh who would want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing,
Roman cavalry choirs are singing,
Be my mirror, my sword and shield,
My missionaries in a foreign field,
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name,
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(music)
Hear Jerusalem bells are ringing,
Roman cavalry choirs are singing,
Be my mirror, my sword and shield,
My missionaries in a foreign field,
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name,
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world...
The song relates to my theme of flight and fall, because it is about this guy who used to be great "I used to rule the world". But then something bad happened, "One minute I held the key, next the walls were closed on me". And that ruined his life and then he fell from greatness and turned into a nobody, "Sweep the streets I used to own", "It was the wicked and wild wind, blew down the doors to let me in".

The photo I chose to represent flight is above.
It is by Ray Massey, and has no name and it was taken in May 28 2008.
The connection to my theme is that the plane is litteraly flying. This is one of the only ways that mankind has found to truly fly. It is also the most effective, because it can relatively cheaply and easily transport a bunch of people from one place to another.

The photo I chose to represent fall is above,
It is by Catherine Elsworth, and has no name and it was taken in17 Jan 2009
The connection to my theme is: that the plane litteral fell from the sky. The plane fell from it's peak and ended it's "life" in the hudson bay.
